Alan D’Silva is a partner at Stikeman Elliott LLP and has a diverse commercial litigation practice, including representing clients in a wide variety of insurance-related disputes. He has appeared before all levels of courts in Ontario, the Federal Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada and has also represented clients before various administrative tribunals. Alan has acted as counsel in more than 100 publicly reported cases. He has frequently appeared as counsel in Canadian appellate courts, including more than 50 appeals in the Ontario Divisional Court and Court of Appeal. He was recently counsel for the insurance industry, in four recent cases in the Supreme Court of Canada, including the Childs “social host” case and the Vytlingham/Herbison appeals. He is currently lead counsel for one of the parties in the Alberta “damages cap” appeal.

Alan is a frequent speaker at legal and business conferences. He has authored or co-authored over 50 legal articles or law review submissions. One of his review articles has been cited by the Supreme Court of Canada and numerous other courts and tribunals. He is co-author of the Canadian Directors and Officers Handbook.
He was an Adjunct Professor, University of Toronto Faculty of Law, 1998-99 (appeals and judicial reviews), and a Former Instructor at the Law Society’s Bar Admission Course, (civil litigation, legal writing) 1992-98. Trained and certified as a mediator (Advocates’ Society/ Harvard Program, 1998). Member of the Board of Directors, Advocates’ Society (2006- ). Executive OBA Insurance Sector (2006-2007), Chair Advocates Society OGF Standing Committee (2007-08). Alan is also a member of Stikeman Elliott’s Toronto Management Committee.
