Franklin (Tad) Montross, IV, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, General Re Corporation

Tad Montross is Chairman and CEO of General Re Corporation. General Re, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., provides reinsurance and related risk management services on a global basis. The company, which has over $12 billion of capital, is one of the world’s largest reinsurers.

In addition to writing property/casualty and life/health reinsurance, General Re underwrites excess and surplus lines insurance through General Star Management Company, risk management business through Genesis Underwriting Management Company, Lloyd’s and London Market risks through the Faraday Group, provides reinsurance brokerage services through Gen Re Intermediaries and manages aviation insurance risks through United States Aviation Underwriters. In addition, General Re also provides specialized investment management services to the insurance industry through General Re-New England Asset Management.

Prior to being named Chairman and CEO in April 2008, Tad had served since September 2001 as President and Chief Underwriting Officer of General Re Corporation and General Reinsurance Corporation, the company’s principal operating entity in North America. Tad continues in his role as Chairman of Gen Re Intermediaries.

Tad joined Gen Re in 1978 as a Casualty Facultative Underwriter, and was promoted to Senior Vice President of General Reinsurance Corporation in 1992, the same year he was named Chief Underwriting Officer for North America Treaty and Manager of the Underwriting Services Division. In 1995, Tad was named a Director of General Reinsurance Corporation and a member of the Executive Committee of the Board, and he was elected to the Vorstand of The Cologne Re. Tad was promoted to Executive Vice President and Vice Chairman of General Reinsurance and Executive Vice President, Chief Underwriting Officer of General Re Corporation in May 2000.

Tad is a graduate of Harvard College. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Disaster Coalition, and on the Advisory Committee of the Chicago Board of Trade. He has served as a board member of the Insurance Information Institute (III) and various Reinsurance Association of America (RAA) Advisory Committees. Tad has made presentations worldwide on reinsurance and industry-related issues. Until recently, he was a member of the Financial Services Advisory Committee to the Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives. Currently, he is on the Board Overseers of the School of Risk Management, part of St. John’s University in New York City; the Board of Trustees of the American Institute for CPCU (AICPCU); and the Board of the Reinsurance Association of America.
