John R. Bender is currently Chief Executive Officer for Allied World’s global reinsurance operations. John sits on Allied World’s Holding Company board as well as both Swiss and US operating company boards. John is responsible for setting and executing strategies and business plans for Allied World’s global reinsurance platform. He is also responsible for Allied World’s ceded reinsurance, Cat Analytics, information technology and real estate departments. He is also a member of Allied World’s Executive Management committee, which sets strategy & direction for the company.
John joined Allied World in 2007, to start up and build out a US based reinsurance company. His responsibilities expanded to building out the global reinsurance franchise for Allied World in 2010. This expansion included operations in London, Zug, Singapore & Miami to service our global customers.
Prior to joining Allied World, John was the Chief Underwriting Officer – Casualty at Platinum Underwriters from 2002 – 2007. During that time he had oversight responsibilities for all Casualty Underwriting operations globally. This included general casualty, environmental, professional liability, medical malpractice, accident & health and specialty casualty lines of business.
From 1989 – 2002, John held multiple officer and non-officer roles in both the treaty underwriting and claims departments of St Paul Re. He started in the claims department handling claims for all lines of business on both the treaty and facultative sides of the business. This included asbestos, environmental, medical malpractice and financial claims. In 1991, he moved to underwriting, where he underwrote all casualty lines of business, eventually specializing in the General Casualty area. He was a principle member of the management team that spun-off of St Paul Re to Platinum Underwriters.
John is also on the boards oftwo industry trade associations, The Reinsurance Association of America and Brokers & Reinsurance Markets Association. He is also one of the Founders, Chairman Emiratis and current board member of the St Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest non-governmental funder of childhood cancer research in the world.
