Jim Sullivan is a litigation Partner with expertise in environmental law and class actions. He is lead litigation counsel in the Firm’s Environmental Group in Vancouver. Since 2001, the Environmental Group has received the top ranking in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory. Blakes is the only firm to receive such a ranking 10 years in a row in Western Canada.

Jim has appeared as counsel in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, as well as before the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also frequently appeared before the British Columbia Environmental Appeal Board and other administrative tribunals.

Jim has represented clients in numerous major contaminated site, regulatory offence, class action, constitutional, commercial, product liability, and personal property security cases. He has been counsel in many leading Canadian environmental, class action and constitutional cases, including Kimpton v. A.G. of Canada (CAD 2-billion class action), Burrard View Neighborhood Association v. Lafarge Canada Inc. (constitutional separation of powers) and Border Enterprises Limited v. Beazer East, Inc. (liability for contaminated sites).

Jim is the author of A Guide to the British Columbia Class Proceedings Act (Butterworths, 1997) and is the co-author, with the Honourable Mr. Justice Mazko of the British Columbia Supreme Court, of the Class Proceedings Act, Annotated (The Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C., 2000 & 2002). He is a contributor to the British Columbia Supreme Court Class Action Manual (Supreme Court of British Columbia, 1999) and a contributing author to Litigating Conspiracy: An Analysis of Competition Class Actions (Irwin Law, 2006) and Government Liability: Law and Practice (Canada Law Book, 2007). Jim is a contributing editor of the Federated Press Class Action Journal and has written numerous articles and lectured extensively on class actions and environmental law throughout Canada, the United States and Europe.
